Round Table Luncheon: Sabine Zermeno Earns Providence’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award

Providence’s Sabine Zermeno was honored at a packed Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon on Monday at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Along with Zermeno being named her school’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award, there were 22 teams in attendance to give updates on their respective seasons.

Zermeno joins Santa Barbara’s Carter Battle, Bishop Diego’s Harry Hayman, San Marcos’ David Ramirez and Carpinteria’s Penny Wrought as this year’s recipients. Dave Pintard of the Pintard Group sponsors the award.

As it states on the SBART website, “This award acknowledges student-athletes who value and incorporate into their daily lives, the following qualities: accountability, respect of teammates, opponents, and officials, honesty, positive attitude, reliability, loyalty, sportsmanship, others above self, and team above personal interest.”

A student-athlete for the Providence tennis, track & field and volleyball teams, Zermeno is a very active member of the Patriot athletic scene.

“She is such a pleasant person to be around and gels with every single teammate on all of her teams,” Providence athletic director Dan Terry said. “She is always quick to say something kind and I don’t think I’ve heard her say a negative word about anyone or anything.”

On top of her excelling on the field or court, Zermeno holds a 3.52 GPA and is involved in the Kids Helping Kids Non-Profit.

“While we have had a range of student-athletes suggested by teachers and coaches at Providence, Sabine was a name that popped up over and over again,” Terry said.
