Santa Barbara High’s Luke Zuffelato, Dayzia Mendoza Honored as Athletes of the Week

Basketball players Luke Zuffelato and Dayzia Mendoza of Santa Barbara High were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Zuffelato has scored 20 or more points in all six Santa Barbara boys basketball games this season. Last week, the sophomore had 22 points to go with eight rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots in a win over St. Bonaventure and tossed in 23 points in a loss to powerhouse St. John Bosco. He was 5 of 10 on three-pointers.

Mendoza recorded a pair of double-doubles in games at the Lompoc Tournament. The sophomore scored 19 points and grabbed 14 points in a victory over Lompoc, the Dons’ first win of the season, and had 11 points and 13 boards in a two-point loss against Santa Ynez.

The other female student athletes considered for the award include Charlotte Raisin (San Marcos water polo) Lily Simolon (Bishop Diego basketball), Galilea De La Cruz (Bishop Diego basketball) and Michelle Arellanes (San Marcos basketball).

The male honorable mention choices were Jengus Ercil (Cate basketball), Francisco Espinosa (Dos Pueblos wrestling), Ajarre Sanni (UCSB basketball).

The Athletes of the Week are selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be submitted by 10 a.m. on Sunday.
