Bishop Diego volleyball player Emma Coglizer and running back Brandon Smith of the SBCC football team have been named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
Coglizer played a huge role in Bishop Diego’s upset of San Marcos in five games in the regular-season volleyball finale at the Thunderhut.
The Cardinals’ libero picked up 16 digs and didn’t commit an error on serve receiving, which proved to be critical in the non-league match.
Bishop Diego, champions of Tri-Valley League, opens the CIF-SS Divison 5 playoffs Thursday at home against Mary Star.
Smith rushed for more than 100 yards for the fourth straight game, gaining 156 on 16 carries in a 63-0 SBCC win over L.A. Pierce. He scored a touchdown on a 52-yard run.
Smith became the first player in coach Craig Moropoulos’ 15 years at SBCC to rush for more than 100 yards in four consecutive games. A week earlier, he set the program’s single-game rushing record with 260 yards in a win over Glendale.
The athletes that were honorable mention this week include Misa Paiau (Bishop Diego football), Abel Renteria (Santa Barbara High football), Luke Brody (Dos Pueblos water polo), Caroline McCarty (SBCC women’s volleyball), Luz Schubert (Laguna Blanca girls golf).
The Athlete of the Week awards are determined by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday.
The award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
