Prep, College Athletes, Coaches Celebrated at SB Athletic Round Table’s Evening With The Athletes

The athletes of the year in every high school and college sport as well as the college and prep coaches of the year were presented Wednesday night at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Evening With The Athletes at the Majorie Luke Theater.

UCSB baseball’s Andrew Checketts and retiring Santa Barbara High boys basketball coach Dave Bregante were the Coaches of the Year.

In addition to the athletes of the year, Josie Morales of Dos Pueblos was awarded the first Phil Womble Ethics in Sports scholarship.

Other scholarship winners were Jacquelin Moreno of San Marcos, the Russ Morrison Memorial Golf Scholarhip;  Kiana Sina of Dos Pueblos, the Larry Crandell Memorial Scholarship; Bishop Diego graduate and current Williamette University student athlete Dylan Streett, the SBART Founders Scholarship; Shaye Grant of Santa Barbara High, the Jim Ranta Memorial Scholarship.

The community award winners were: Oscar Garcia of the Revolution Youth Soccer League, the Russell Hargreaves Award recipient; Jane Cairnes, director of the Reef and Run ocean swim series, the R.F. MacFarland Memorial Award.

The Master Athlete Award went to Ron Boehm, a longtime competitive sailor who speicalizes in the single-handed International 14s class.

The Open Division Athletes of the Year were marathon runner Seth Totten, who set at Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:14.30, and swimmer Kevin Mendoza, an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100 butterfly.

The Dos Pueblos water polo trio of Sophie Leggett (Girls Water Polo Player of the Year), Angus Goodner (DP’s Scholar Athlete of the Year) and Ethan Parrish (Boys Water Polo Player of the Year).
Josie Morales was presented the first Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Scholarship by award sponsor Dave Pintard. Morales is a senior at Dos Pueblos.
Isaac Stone of Santa Barbara High is the High School Boys Golfer of the Year. He won the Channel League title and qualified for the CIF Individual Finals.
Samuel Jauregui is the recipient of the Mayor’s Trophy, the award for the Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.
College Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year Brian Nnoli of SBCC and his mom.
Beau Allen of San Marcos is the High School Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Allen is headed to Duke.
Mikayla Butzke, a three-sport athlete at Dos Pueblos, was DP’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award winner this season.
Among the Fall Sports Athletes of Year were, from left: Lindsey Ruddins of UCSB volleyball; Adrian Soracco, Bishop Diego football, and Grace Hay, Bishop Diego golf.
Past and present Santa Barbara High baseball players were honored. Bryce Morison, left, of Westmont, was the College Player of the Year, and Derek True of the Channel League-champion Dons was High School Player of the Year.
