San Marcos’ Avery Leck, Benjamin Caputo Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

San Marcos took home both Athletes of the Week this week, with Track & Field’s Avery Leck and Swim & Dive’s Benjamin Caputo putting up big performances against crosstown rivals.

Leck and Caputo were honored at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

At the City Championship Track meet, Leck showed out by placing first in the 100 meter, 100 hurdles, high jump and long jump to lead her team to the first-place finish.

Then, over the weekend, she picked up fourth place in the heptathlon at the Arcadia Invitational, setting personal bests in five of the seven events.

Meanwhile, Caputo helped the Royals to a meet win over Dos Pueblos, taking first place in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke.

After capturing the two individual titles, Caputo raced a leg on the first-place 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams. 

The girls honorable mentions were Madison Benedict (SBHS Softball), Olivia Ressler (SBHS Softball), Mia Martinez-Tomatis (SMHS Lacrosse), Kiala Haas (SMHS Track & Field), Averi Alexander (CARP Track & Field).

The boys honorable mentions were Eric Anthony (SBHS Baseball), Charlie Potter (DPHS Baseball), Nick Malesky (BDHS Volleyball), Shams Jahangir-Arshad (SMHS Golf), Cal Denier (DPHS Lacrosse), Ethan Ball (SMHS T&F), Malachi Johnston (SBHS T&F), Gabe Runyen (DPHS T&F).

The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday morning, if possible.
