Bishop Diego’s Abigail Garcia was named the school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and local high school spring sports made their first appearance of the year at a Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon on Monday at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Bishop Diego Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Garcia earned the Cardinals’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for her dedication and commitment in the classroom and to four different sports on campus.
While holding a 3.75 unweighted GPA and serving as the school’s ASB Vice President, Garcia is a member of the Bishop Diego flag football, volleyball, soccer and track & field teams.
She was the team captain of the flag football and soccer teams.
“It’s always nice to have kids that work hard and are very academic and athletic-oriented,” Bishop Diego athletic director John Muller said. “She’s our best soccer player by far, she dominated the field.”
In her high school athletic career, Garcia has been a part of two CIF champion teams and has earned All-League First Team honors for soccer in each of her three seasons.
“I just want to say thank you to all my coaches and teammates, and to my parents especially for supporting me in everything that I do and always keeping me motivated to keep going,” Garcia said.
Garcia joins Cate’s Sebastian Sutch, Dos Pueblos’ Jaden Moore, San Marcos’ Matthew Chung, Santa Barbara’s Andreas Dybdahl and Carpinteria’s Asher Smith as this year’s recipients of the award.
The honor is sponsored by Marc Gamberdella of the Gamberdella-Spruill Group of Merrill Lynch.
Spring Sports Make Their Return
