Basketball Standouts Marcus Scudder, Justine Katz Take Home Athlete of the Week Honors

A pair of local basketball players earned this week’s Athlete of the Week honors, with Cate’s Marcus Scudder and Justine Katz of Dos Pueblos winning the award.

Katz and Scudder were honored at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Scudder, a point guard, spearheaded the Rams offensive attack in both of their wins last week.

He dropped 25 points in a 57-43 win over Thacher and piled up 22 points in a big 67-62 victory over crosstown rival Bishop Diego to open Tri-Valley League play.

Meanwhile, Katz stepped up in a huge matchup against defending league champion Ventura High last Tuesday.

Katz exploded for 24 points in an upset 75-74 victory in overtime against the Cougars, giving Dos Pueblos its first win over Ventura since the 1990s.

The boys honorable mentions for the week were Luke Zuffelato (SB Basketball), Finn Whipps (SB Basketball), Joe Pasternack (SM Basketball), Tyler Martinez (Cate Basketball), Raul Reyes (Carp Soccer) and Jesus Miranda Mendoza (SB Soccer).

As for the girls, the honorable mentions were Carley Nielsen (SM Basketball), Dayzia Mendoza (SB Basketball), Jamaica Cook (Carp Basketball), Amarisse Camargo (Carp Basketball), Maleja Wilcox (DP Soccer), Charlotte Raisin (SM Water Polo) and Makenna Stretz (SM Water Polo).

The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday morning, if possible.
