The Royals swept this week’s Athlete of the Week honors at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
San Marcos football’s Nathan Jones led his squad to a big rivalry win over Dos Pueblos and San Marcos girls tennis’ Mina Yazadzhiev picked up a pair of titles in the Santa Barbara City Tennis Championship Tournament.
Jones made an impact on both sides of the ball, taking 17 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown in the backfield while also tallying a pair of interceptions and eight tackles from the safety position.
This performance earned Jones the Battle of the Goodland MVP award named after Jeff Hesselmeyer, who coached football at both San Marcos and Dos Pueblos.
Yazadzhiev, meanwhile, won both the Mixed Doubles and Women’s Singles Championships at the Santa Barbara City Tennis Championship Tournament.
The tournament, hosted by the Santa Barbara Tennis Patrons, consisted of 98 total players from all across California.
The honorable mentions on the boys’ side were Sam Rich (San Marcos Water Polo), Shane Davis (Santa Barbara Water Polo), Angel Diaz (SBCC Soccer) and Kayden Chan (SBCC Football).
On the girls’ side, the honorable mentions were Emmy Werner (Santa Barbara Volleyball), Lia Papador (Dos Pueblos Volleyball), Natalie Bianchi (Laguna Blanca), Rio Chesluk (San Marcos Flag Football) and Abbie Riggs (SBCC Soccer).
