Round Table Luncheon: Sebastian Sutch Named Cate’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Cate standout three-sport athlete Sebastian Sutch was honored as the school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon.

The award is sponsored by Marc Gamberdella of the Gamberdella-Spruill Group of Merrill Lynch.

“It’s an arms race,” Gamerdella said of the award. Every year, the caliber of students and athletes becomes higher and higher and this town definitely produces a lot of talent, not only on the field, in the pool or on the court, but in the classroom, which is most important.”

Sutch is a cross country, track and field and soccer star for the Rams, but where he has cemented himself in the school’s legacy is on the track.

The senior holds Cate’s school record in the 1,600-meter and 800-meter races and was part of the school’s record-breaking 4×400 team.

He also was the CIF Div. 4 and Santa Barbara County Champion in each of the 1,600 and 800-meter races.

In the classroom, Sutch holds a 4.42 GPA and takes all advanced courses. He was also the recipient of both the Frank B. Light Cup, which is given to a student in 9th or 10th grade for outstanding work in history, and the Art and Scholastic Award in 2022.

Sutch will attend Yale after high school and will compete for their Division-I track and field team.

“I would like to thank my coaches, teammates and fellow students,” Sutch said. “There are a number of people exceedingly qualified for this, so it’s an honor”

This week, Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High will face off in a trio of rivalry matchups in three different sports.

On Tuesday, the Chargers and Dons will meet in the pool for boys’ water polo and then the girls’ flag football teams will take the field on Thursday. The rivalry series will be wrapped up on Friday when Dos Pueblos hosts Santa Barbara for a football game.

The girls’ volleyball playoffs also begin this week, with seven local teams playing in the first round on Thursday. Find a full breakdown of the matchups here.
