Bishop Diego volleyball standout Harry Hayman was awarded the school’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Hayman is the second winner of the award for this season, joining Santa Barbara High’s Carter Battle.
This award, per the SBART website, acknowledges student-athletes who value and incorporate into their daily lives the following qualities: accountability, respect of teammates, opponents, and officials, honesty, positive attitude, reliability, loyalty, sportsmanship, others above self, and team above personal interest.
Hayman plays on both the indoor and beach volleyball teams for the Cardinals and was a co-founder of the beach volleyball program, which just concluded its inaugural season. He also is the co-founder of the school’s surf club.
“When I read the criteria for the Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award, I had the easiest choice of my coaching career. This award was made for Harry,” Bishop Diego volleyball coach Jackson Stevens said.
On the court, Hayman is a leader and was honored with the Coach’s Award for his JV indoor team.
“Harry has a unique personality and a character that fits the team sport of volleyball,” Stevens said. “His communication on the court is unmatched and his willingness to help others on and off the court is always present.”
In the classroom, Hayman boasts an impressive 4.09 GPA and has earned the honor of excellence in Spanish 1, Algebra 2 and Precalculus. He is interested in fields related to math, possibly industrial engineering.
“I would like to thank my coaches, particularly Coach Stevens, and the Bishop Athletic program as well as my parents and everyone who supports me,” Hayman said. “For me, sports are about teammates working together with respect for and trust in each other.
“When teams have respect and trust in each other, we then are able to take our game off the court and into other aspects of our lives.”
As for the rest of the luncheon, high school football, flag football, boys water polo, girls tennis teams were represented while UC Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College gave updates on their fall seasons.
Highlighting this week of local prep sports is the Channel League boys water polo tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, which will be hosted by both Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High.
Along with the action on the pool deck, the high school football regular season comes to a close this weekend as teams look to punch their tickets into the playoffs.
