Carpinteria’s Talon Trumble, Santa Barbara High’s Dayzia Mendoza Named Athletes of the Week

Each of this week’s Athletes of the Week comes from the gridiron, as Carpinteria High’s Talon Trumble did a little bit of everything on Friday, while Dayzia Mendoza of Santa Barbara High girls flag football led an impressive comeback on Thursday to earn the honors.

There was no Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon on Monday due to Labor Day, but Trumble and Mendoza will be honored at the luncheon next Monday.

Trumble was all over the field in the Warriors’ home opener on Friday, leading the offense at quarterback and spearheading the defensive efforts from the middle linebacker position.

The senior threw for 88 yards and a passing touchdown while rushing for 90 yards and scoring two touchdowns on the ground. He also racked up tackles on defense en route to the 35-6 win over Channel Islands.

Mendoza, meanwhile, is the first-ever Athlete of the Week from girls flag football. And she earned it.

With her team down 14-0 with 6:30 left, Mendoza threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one to lead a furious comeback for a 21-14 victory. The junior also added two interceptions.

The male honorable mentions include Oscar Mauia (Bishop Diego Football), Luke Crawford (San Marcos Football) and Gabe Lea (Laguna Blanca Football).

On the girls side, other athletes considered were Rio Chesluk (San Marcos Flag Football), Tessa de Albergaria (Santa Barbara Volleyball), Gwen Chenoweth (Santa Barbara Volleyball), Natalie Bianchi (Laguna Blanca Volleyball) and Izzy Scott (Carpinteria Tennis).

The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday, if possible.
