San Marcos golfer Leo Metzger and Mia Martinez-Tomatis of the Royals’ girls lacrosse team have been named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
The award winners will be recognized at the SBART Press Luncheon on Monday, March 13. There was no luncheon on March 6 as the students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District had a day off from classes because of a Professional Development Day for the faculty.
Metzger shot a 6-under par 65 at La Cumbre Country Club to lead San Marcos to a non-league dual-match win over Santa Barbara. Earlier, he shot a 1-under 70 for the second-lowest individual score in leading a three-player San Marcos team to the title at the Spanish Hills Invitational in Camarillo.
Metzger, a senior, won the Santa Barbara City Championship last summer and qualified for the U.S. Amateur. He signed a letter of intent with UC Davis.
Martinez-Tomatis set a San Marcos girls lacrosse record of nine goals in the Royals’ 11-5 victory over Saugus.
Earlier, the junior recorded a career-high seven points in a game, scoring four goals and dishing out three assists in an 11-9 loss to Valencia.
The female student-athletes that were honorable mention choices for the award include Caitlyn Early (San Marcos softball), Bella Nuño (Dos Pueblos softball) and Tessa Johansen (Bishop Diego softball).
Raglan Kear (Santa Barbara High volleyball), Grant Hughes (Dos Pueblos volleyball) and Salem Bawahneh (Dos Pueblos lacrosse) were the other male student-athletes considered for the award.
Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student-athletes each week. The nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 11 a.m.
The winners are selected by members of the local sports media.
The Athlete of the Week is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
