Cole Schoenwetter of San Marcos, Santa Barbara’s Anne Knecht Named Athletes of Week

San Marcos baseball’s Cole Schoenwetter and Anne Knecht of the Santa Barbara High track & field team were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Schoenwetter, rated by scouting services as one of the top high school pitchers in the country, threw five shutout innings against Ventura, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 in a 4-0 win. He helped his own cause at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a home run, double and two RBIs.

In San Marcos’ two-game Channel League sweep against the Cougars, the senior batted 4 for 5 with a homer, two doubles and four RBIs.

Knecht shined for Santa Barbara in the 1600 at the Ventura Invitational. The senior, formerly a sprinter, won the girls varsity race in a meet record and personal best of 5:10.33

Knecht’s previous best mark was 5:42.

The female athletes that were honorable mention choices for the award include Makenzie Fauver (San Marcos track & field), Josie Gamberdella (San Marcos beach volleyball), Malia Benson (UCSB track & field) and Bailey Fong (Westmont basketball).

The other male athletes in the running for the award were Ajay Mitchell (UCSB basketball), Luke Walker (San Marcos volleyball), Jack Wilson (San Marcos volleyball) and Eric Anthony (Santa Barbara High baseball).

The Athletes of the Week are selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominated deserving student athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 12 p.m.
