Niko Proft of the Santa Barbara High wrestling team and Carpinteria soccer’s Sophia Mora were named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, the SBART didn’t hold a press luncheon on Monday. Proft and Mora will be presented their Athlete of the Week awards at the next luncheon on Jan. 23.
Proft started the week by pinning his San Marcos opponent to help Santa Barbara beat the Royals in a Channel League dual meet and clinch the “City Championship” for the first time in program history The Dons earlier defeated Dos Pueblos.
Over the weekend, Proft won the title in the 147-pound weight class at the Santa Ynez Invitational. The senior didn’t concede a point in any match at the tournament.
Mora led the resurgent Carpinteria girls soccer team to a pair of Citrus Coast League wins last week. She scored two goals and assisted on another in a 5-1 victory over Malibu and scored a goal from distance in a 4-0 shutout of Nordhoff.
“She has been working really hard this season and is one of the reasons our program is on the upswing this year,” said coach Freddy Martinez.
Carpinteria is 4-2-1 in league and 6-5-1 overall.
The honorable mention choices for the award include Justin Hess (San Marcos boys soccer), Giulia Piccoletti (Carpinteria girls water polo) and Alyssa Marin (UCSB women’s basketball).
The Athlete of the Week is selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
