Santa Barbara High’s Carter Battle, Kayalily Penn of Bishop Diego Named Athletes of Week

Santa Barbara High basketball player Carter Battle and Bishop Diego soccer’s Kayalily Penn were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Battle turned in fine all-around performance in two Channel League games last week, a 70-70-64 overtime loss at Buena and a 64-50 win at Dos Pueblos. The junior averaged 15 points on 60% shooting 5.5 rebounds and five rebounds.

His defense provided a spark for the Dons in their win over Dos Pueblos.

Penn, who led Bishop Diego to a CIF-SS title last season as a freshman, scored five goals in two Tri-Valley League wins against Thacher and St. Bonaventure. She had four goals in 5-0 win over St. Bonaventure and score one in a 3-2 victory over Thacher

The honorable mention choices for females include Justine Katz (Dos Pueblos basketball), Emma Gilbert (Dos Pueblos water polo) and Stefanie Berberabe (Westmont basketball.

The other male athletes considered for the award were Miles Norris (UCSB basketball) and Franky Baron (Laguna Blanca soccer).

The Athlete of the Week awards are selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to submit nominations. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
