Rosales scored a late game-winning goal for a 2-1 victory over Buena to keep the Royals unbeaten in league play.

In a crosstown rivalry game against Santa Barbara High, he tallied the go-ahead goal in a 5-1 win that clinched a third straight league title for San Marcos. The Royals are 12-0 in league.

“He’s been an essential player for us,” said San Marcos assistant coach Genaro Hernandez of Rosales, who has scored eight goals while coming off the bench.

Simolon came up big for Bishop Diego in the fourth quarter of a 43-36 win against St. Bonaventure in a key Tri-Valley League game. She scored 10 of her 15 points in the quarter, including a three-point play late in the game four free throws.

“She was not going to let us lose,” said coach Jeff Burich.

The Cardinals’ win clinched a CIF playoff spot. They are 20-3 on the season and 4-1 in league. They play at 5-0 Foothill Tech on Thursday.

The female honorable mention choices were Ila Lane (UCSB basketball) and Giulia Piccoletti (Carpinteria water polo).

The other male candidates for the award include Ajay Mitchell (UCSB basketball), Baylor Wilson (Laguna Blanca soccer) and Bryce McFeely (Westmont baseball).

The Athlete of the Week award is selected by members of the local sports media.  Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving candidates. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
