San Marcos water polo goalie Matthew Demboski and Avala Elwood, the No. 1 singles player for the Providence girls tennis team, were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Demboski made 12 saves and stopped a penalty shot in the last two minutes of the game to preserve an 8-6 San Marcos win over Westlake in the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals.
Demboski and the Royals will face top-seeded San Clemente in the semifinals on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. It’s San Marcos’ first semifinal appearance since 2003
Elwood sparked Providence to a second-round victory over Valley View in the CIF-SS Division 4 girls tennis playoffs.
She rallied from a 5-2 deficit in her first-round set, saved two set points and prevailed 7-5 against Valley View’s top player. Elwood won her next set 6-0, helping the Patriots to a 12-6 victory.
Providence (10-6) is schedule to play at Pacifica Christian of Orange County in the quarterfinals this week.
The honorable mention choices for this week’s awards were Sage Holter (SBCC women’s cross country), Kendall Thorne (Cate girls cross country), Andreas Dybdahl (Santa Barbara High boys cross country), Misa Paiau (Bishop Diego football), Brody Luke (Dos Pueblos boys water polo) and Qu’Ran Gossett (Bishop Diego football).
The Athlete of the Week awards are voted by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be emailed to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
