Gossett set a Santa Barbara County football record by rushing for 404 yards on just 15 carries in the Cardinals’ 49-28 win at Simi Valley. The victory clinched an automatic berth in the CIF-SS playoffs out of the Marmonte League.

Gossett, a senior running back, broke the single-game rushing record of 363 yards set by Righetti’s Ryan Mole in 2003.  His six touchdowns in the game tied Mole for the county record.

Bishop Diego will host Vista Murrieta in a Division 3 first-round game on Saturday at La Playa Stadium.

Wolfe Lyons was the only girls runner to break 19 minutes in winning the individual title at the Santa Babara County Cross Country Championships at Lompoc’s River Park. The senior ran the three-mile course in 18:53.98 and led the Charger girls to the team title.

Wolfe Lyons and the Chargers will be competing in the Channel League Finals at Oxnard’s College Park on Friday.

The honorable choices for the girls award include the Carpinteria tennis doubles team of Ariana Lounsbury and Charlotte Cooney, the San Marcos doubles team of Natasha Gill and Mina Yazadzhiev, and SBCC water polo player Claire Daland.

The male honorable mention picks were Kai Mault (Santa Barbara High football), Jaxon Burford (Santa Barbara High water polo) and Eamon Gordon (Dos Pueblos cross country).

The Athletes of the Week are selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to submit nominations each week. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.

The award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
