Santa Barbara High’s Andrew Tobin, Gracie Meinzer Named Athletes of the Week

Santa Barbara High football’s Andrew Tobin and volleyball’s Gracie Meinzer were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Meinzer’s stellar overall play on the court helped the Dons defeat Oxnard and San Marcos, enabling them to take sole possession of first place in the Channel League at 8-1.

The senior setter/opposite, had seven kills, 25 assists, three blocks, six digs and a service ace in a four-set win at San Marcos to give the Dons a sweep of the season series. Against Oxnard, she dished out 22 assists, had kills, four digs and an ace in a four-set victory.

Tobin played a huge part in Santa Barbara’s exciting 7-6 overtime win over Rio Mesa in a key Channel League football game at Peabody Stadium.

The senior free safety was in on nine tackles, had five pass break-ups and made the first hit on Rio Mesa’s running back on the Spartans’ failed 2-point conversion in overtime. The stop gave the Dons the victory and put them at 3-1 in league play.

The male honorable mention choices for the award are David Buso (Dos Pueblos football), Bart Muns (SBCC soccer), Eamon Gordon (Dos Pueblos cross country), Jacob Navarez.

The other female student athletes in the running for the award include Emma Schubert (Laguna Blanca golf), Phoebe Wolfe Lyons (Dos Pueblos cross country) and Ava Guenther (SBCC volleyball).

The Athlete of the Week award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice and selected by members of the local sports media
