Abel Renteria of SBHS Football, San Marcos Tennis No. 1 Natasha Gill Named Athletes of Week

Santa Barbara High junior quarterback Abel Renteria and San Marcos tennis senior Natasha Gill were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athlete Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Renteria led the Dons to a 47-7 win at Oxnard last Friday in a Channel League game. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for a score.

The junior signal-caller is ranked second in the state in total passing yards with 1,305 in four games. He’s completing 68 percent of his passes.

Gill swept her three singles sets to pace San Marcos to a 12-6 Channel League victory over rival Santa Barbara in their first crosstown match of the season.

A four-year varsity player, Gill is the two-time defending Channel League singles champion.

The honorable mention choices for the awards this weeks include Shae Delany (Santa Barbara High volleyball), Phoebe Wolfe Lyons (Dos Pueblos girls cross country), Trenton Luera (SBCC football), Kai Mault (Santa Barbara High football) Andreas Dybdahl (Santa Barbara High boys cross country), Eamon Gordon (Dos Pueblos boys cross country).

The Athletes of the Week candidates and winners are chosen by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday morning.
