San Marcos High baseball player Joaquin Sandoval and Carpinteria swimmer Erin Otsuki were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s final Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon of the 2021-22 school year.
Sandoval, a senior captain and catcher, had a big week at the plate in two wins over Lompoc that sewed up a second straight Channel League title for the Royals.
He batted 5 for 9, with a home run, three doubles, four RBI and four runs scored. The home run at San Marcos’ Joe Mueller Field was the first by a San Marcos player in two years, said coach Wes Ghan-Gibson.
Sandoval and the Royals will open the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs at home on Thursday.
Otsuki won Citrus Coast League titles in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and the 200 medley and 400 free relays, and finished the regular season undefeated in those events.
The 200 medley relay set a school record by more than a second and the 400 relay established a season-best and automatic CIF qualifying time at the league championships.
Otsuki and the Warriors will be competing at the CIF-SS Division 4 Prelims in Mission Viejo on Thursday.
The honorable mention selections for the Athlete of Week were Austin Stone (Carpinteria tennis), Jacob Snodgress (San Marcos track & field), Joaquin Gonzalez (Carpinteria volleyball), Grant Hughes (Dos Pueblos volleyball), Sierra Tallman (San Marcos girls swimming), Kendall Keshen (Laguna Blanca girls swimming), Makenzie Fauver (San Marcos track & field), Katherine Hedrick (Santa Barbara High track & field).
The Athletes of the Week award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
