Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Inducts Hall of Fame Class of 2020

The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table inducted its 2020 Hall of Fame class at the Cabrillo Arts Center. After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table presented its 2020 Hall of Fame induction class in a ceremony at the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion on Monday.

The class included seven athletes and a special achievement inductee.

The athletes honored were Kami Craig, Carly Wopat, Alfonso Guzman, Heather Olmstead, Mike Berg, David Medina and Cyrus Brunner (posthumously). Brunner was represented by his mother, Penny, and older sister, Jami Brunner Stetler.

Mary Jo Swalley, a longtime swim meet official, the executive director of Southern California Swimming and a vice president with USA Swimming, was recognized as the special achievement inductee.

Craig starred in water polo at Santa Barbara High, leading the Dons to a pair of CIF titles. She won a national title at USC and won two Olympic gold medals and a silver playing with the USA Water Polo Women’s National  Team.

Wopat led Dos Pueblos girls volleyball to two CIF-SS Division 1A finals and a championship in 2009. She was a three-time first-team All-American at Stanford, played on the U.S. National Team and later on the pro beach volleyball AVP Tour.

Guzman started the boys soccer program at Santa Barbara High in 1972 and was a star player at Westmont College, where he was honored three straight years as an All-American.

Olmstead, a Carpinteria High alum, is the women’s volleyball coach at BYU. She has elevated the Cougars to an elite program in NCAA Divison 1.

Mike Berg was a standout on a San Marcos golf team that started a Channel League dynasty in the 1990s. The Royals won 70 straight league matches.

David Medina was named the 1987 CIF Inland Conference MVP after leading the Carpinteria High football team to a 14-0 season and a CIF championship.

Cyrus Brunner was a standout in football, wrestling and baseball at Dos Pueblos. He was All-CIF in baseball and holds the DP season rushing record in football. He earned nine varsity letters in high school. He later played baseball at Bellhaven College in Jackson, Miss.
