Dos Pueblos Pitcher Ryan Speshyock, Bishop Diego Thrower Clara McDonald Honored as Athletes of Week

Ryan Speshyock of Dos Pueblos baseball and Clara McDonald of Bishop Diego track & field were named the Athletes of the Week for their dominant performances on the mound and in the throwing circle, respectively

The junior student athletes were recognized at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

The right-handed Speshyock threw a complete-game no-hitter and struck out 12 in a 6-1 Channel League baseball win at Santa Ynez. The victory improved the Chargers to 8-3 in league, one game behind league-leader San Marcos with four games to play.

McDonald won the shot put and discus titles at the 102nd Russell Cup track and field meet at Carpinteria High.

The defending CIF-SS Division 4 shot put champion won last Saturday’s event with a throw of 35-11.5. l. In the discus, she took first with a personal best of 116-6.

The junior won both throwing events and ran on a first-place 4×100 relay in a Frontier League meet held earlier in the week.

The student athletes who named as honorable mention choices were Taylor Steelman (San Marcos girls swimming), Brynn Graham (Dos Pueblos swimming), Chase Hoover (San Marcos baseball), Jaran Depew (San Marcos boys swimming), Luke Walker (San Marcos volleyball) and Justin Hess (San Marcos boys track & field).

The Athletes of the Week are selected by a vote of members from the local sports media.

Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
