Prep basketball standouts Matthew Cunningham of Bishop Diego and Cate School’s Meena Baher were named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week on Monday.
Cunningham was a scoring machine for the Cardinals in two victories last week. He poured in 37 points in a 67-63 non-league win over Santa Ynez and followed that up with a 39-point game in a 76-44 Tri-Valley League decision over Villanova Prep.
Baher led Cate to wins over Bishop Diego and Villanova to clinch the Frontier League championship. She scored 20 points and spearheaded a tough zone defense in a 56-24 win over Villanova and knocked down four three-points and scored 18 points in a 44-29 victory over Bishop Diego.
Baher was a member of Cate’s CIF State-qualifying girls cross country team in the fall.
The male honorable mention choices for Athlete of Week were: Preston Gomersall (SBCC golf), Tony Njia (San Marcos basketball), Stephen Davis (Santa Barbara High basketball) and Max Heidegger (UCSB basketball).
The other female athletes considered for the award include: Kaitlin Larson (Westmont basketball) and Zoe Cosgrove (UCSB swimming).
