UCSB Water Polo’s Cole Brosnan, Melia Haller of Santa Barbara High Golf Honored as Athletes of Week

The play of Cole Brosnan and Melia Haller helped their respective teams remain undefeated on the season and earn Athlete of the Week honors at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon on Monday.

Brosnan played a huge role for the UCSB men’s water polo team in its 13-9 upset victory over defending national champion and top-ranked USC at the Inland Empire Tournament in Claremont.

Brosnan scored two goals in the first period, helping the Gauchos to a 4-1lead. He finished with five goals and added three assists and a steal to lead the Gauchos to the upset win. They followed with a 15-4 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for their second tournament title and a record-tying ninth straight victory to start the season.

Haller had a big week for the Santa Barbara High golf team. She shot 37 over nine-holes in non-league match victories over Ventura and Buena.

She shared medalist honors in the Ventura victory and her 37 against Buena helped the Dons win the match by one stroke and improve to 7-0.

The female athletes nominated for this week’s award included Portia Sherman (Dos Pueblos volleyball), Taylor Brooks (SBCC water polo), Rowan Ennis (UCSB volleyball), Hali Galloway (Westmont volleyball).

The male honorable mention choices were Rick Randazzo (UCSB cross country), Michael Luckhurst (Bishop Diego football), Bronson Blix (Santa Barbara High water polo).
