Will Collins dished out the hits as a running back and a linebacker for Carpinteria’s football team.
Grace Matthew scooped up numerous hits as the libero for the San Marcos girls volleyball team.
Their performances earned them Athlete of the Week honors at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Collins was moved from quarterback to running back in a Week 2 game against Beverly Hills and he helped his team roll to a 57-6 victory. The senior rushed for 157 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries and caught a pass for a score.
Matthews was a digging machine for San Marcos in a four-set win over Ventura. The senior libero frustrated the opposing hitters by picking up a whopping 35 digs.
The other female nominees for the award included Rowan Ennis (UCSB volleyball), Julia Gregson (Bishop Diego volleyball), Shaina King (San Marcos cross country) and Reese Davidson (Westmont soccer).
The male considered for this week’s award were Deacon Hill (Santa Barbara High football), Jake Knecht (Santa Barbara High football), Trey Hunter (SBCC football) and Joseph Pearlman (Dos Pueblos cross country).
Since there was no press luncheon on Labor Day, the previous week’s winners were recognized at Monday’s gathering. They were Matt Bribiesca of Bishop Diego football and Lindsey Ruddins of UCSB volleyball.
