Josh Brown of the San Marcos football team and Laguna Blanca volleyball player Macy Christal were named the Athletes of the Week at the first Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon of the 2019-20 school year on Monday at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Christal led Laguna Blanca to the championship of the Bishop Diego Classic. With the Owls missing two middles on Saturday because they were taking SATs, Christal stepped up and posted a team-best 25 kills in nine games. Earlier in the week, she had 10 kills in a match against Windward.
Brown was the go-to receiver for quarterback Ben Partee in San Marcos’ 36-14 season-opening victory over Santa Paula. The senior wide receiver caught 11 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns. He had nine grabs for 175 yards in the first half.
The athletes who were selected as honorable mention choices for the award were Maddi Berthoud (Westmont women’s soccer), Tyler Young (Westmont men’s soccer), Adrian Soracco (Bishop Diego football), Deacon Hill (Santa Barbara High football), Ben Partee (San Marcos football).
The Athletes of the Week award is selected by members of the Santa Barbara sports media and presented by Noozhawk at each press luncheon.
