Mike Beresford has coached volleyball for the Santa Barbara schools since 1980. For three years, he coached the boys’ varsity team at San Marcos High School, reaching CIF playoffs each year. In 1982, the team placed second in the CIF championship game against Laguna Beach High School. Starting in 1984, he was head coach for both the boys’ and girls’ varsity volleyball teams at Dos Pueblos High School as well as P.E. Department Chairperson. He retired from the girls’ team in 1998 after reaching CIF playoffs in all but two years. He retired from the District and the boys’ team in 2002 after reaching CIF playoffs in all but one year.
In 1998, the boys’ team advanced to the CIF finals, winning the CIF Division II championship over Tustin High School in a four-game match. He was named CIF Coach of the Year for Division II Volleyball that same year. Beresford continues to work with the Dos Pueblos volleyball program as an assistant coach and consultant for the Dos Pueblos Invitational Tournament.
A graduate of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Mike grew up playing beach volleyball. Recruited off the sand by the Hollywood YMCA, he became a two- time member of their National Indoor AAU Championship Team in 1960 and 1961. Mike attended UCSB where he was a javelin thrower for the varsity track team, placing second in conference championships during his junior and senior year. He was instrumental in starting the men’s volleyball program at UCSB.
One of Mike’s proudest accomplishments is assisting 32 boy and girl players, many of whom received scholarships, to continue in the sport in Division I and II collegiate volleyball.
Beresford and his wife Hattie live in Santa Barbara where they continue to enjoy a variety of sport activities including hiking, tennis, bike riding and golf.
