Carolina Duron Angeles was recognized as the Laguna Blanca Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award winner and Bishop Diego’s CIF-SS D5 championship girls basketball squad was honored to headline the SB Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon on Monday at Harry’s.
While Duron Angeles and the Cardinals served as the headliners, several spring sports squads provided updates on their early-season action.
The weekly SBART luncheon is presented by Maho Prentice LLP, Investec and Fidelity National Title Group Santa Barbara.
Carolina Duron Angeles Wins Laguna Blanca Phil Womble Award
Duron Angeles, a junior, has been a standout student-athlete throughout her years at Laguna Blanca, shining on the basketball court, for the cross country team and in the classroom.
As it states on the SBART website, “This award acknowledges student-athletes who value and incorporate into their daily lives, the following qualities: accountability, respect of teammates, opponents, and officials, honesty, positive attitude, reliability, loyalty, sportsmanship, others above self, and team above personal interest.”
Laguna Blanca head basketball coach Charlie Aslesen has coached Duron Angeles since she was in eighth grade, and views her as a perfect recipient of the award.
“Anyone you get to coach in middle school and follow them up through the ranks is a fun process,” Aslesen said. “It’s fun to win games. It’s fun to see them excel on the court, but watching them be successful off the court is, I think, why we’re in it. It’s a fun process that we get to be a part of.
“Watching [Carolina] just embody what not only I expect of her as a player, but what she and her family expects of her as a person is something that she takes every single day into campus, into basketball games, into the classroom and everything. When we read the Phil Womble Award and what it embodies, it is a reflection of who Carolina is.”
Duron Angeles has been named to the All-Tri-Valley League Girls Basketball 1st Team in three consecutive seasons and earned an All-League Honorable Mention nod in cross country.
In the classroom, she boasts a 3.88 GPA and was named to the Honor Roll for her first two high school years. She is also involved in the community through Flower Empower and the Laguna Summer Camp.
“I want to thank my athletic director, Mr. Peeters. Thanks so much. My coach, who’s been alongside me for four years now. Thank you for guiding me and coaching me. Thank you, Mr. Pintard, for presenting this award. I want to thank my parents and my number one cheerleader and supporter, my brother,” Duron Angeles said.
Duron Angeles is the sixth of eight Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award winners for this school year, joining Santa Barbara High’s Elina Stump, Dos Pueblos’ Logan Pearce, Cate’s Maddie Kollock, Providence’s Gavin Rutland and Carpinteria’s Hazel Dugre. The award is sponsored by Dave Pintard of the Pintard Group.
Bishop Diego Girls Basketball Team Honored
The Cardinals captured the program’s fourth CIF-SS title two weeks ago with a 42-40 win over Burroughs in the title matchup. It was the team’s first championship since the 2015 season.

“This is a great group of girls,” Bishop Diego head coach Jeff Burich said. “It doesn’t start without having a great organization. With our principal, Karen (Regan), our athletic directors, John (Muller) and Melinda (Matsumoto), the support that we get from the school is just amazing.”
Bishop Diego rounded out its standout season with an overall record of 27-5, including six impressive postseason victories against many schools with much higher student populations than itself.
“I can’t be more proud of this group,” Burich said. “The schools we played, the enrollment was over 13,000 in the six games that we played, and we’re like 260 kids. It’s really a credit to these girls.”
The CIF-SS champion squad consisted of Jaymi Coronado, Natalie Rodriguez, Kasey Seashore, Eden Wynne, Yessenia Mendez, Jeisa Coronado, Alyssa Chrestenson Luz Castro, Amy Rojas, Elissa Mendez, Dulce Ledezma and Abby Walters.
“We really just love all the support that we get from everybody that we’ve been involved with and been a part of,” Burich said. “It’s a really great feeling to get up there and get that plaque… It’s something I wish every coach could get because all of you that have gotten it before just know how special it is.”
Spring Sports Season Takes Over
With the final winter high school sports season fully in the rearview mirror, the spring sports teams have taken center stage and many local teams are already off to hot starts.
On the diamond, Dos Pueblos’ baseball and softball teams began the Channel League season with sweeps of Ventura last week. San Marcos softball also went 2-0 in its league matchups.
Meanwhile, the San Marcos girls beach volleyball team rolled through the first half of league action, as the Royals currently stand at 13-1 overall and 6-0 in league play. They will host rival Santa Barbara High (8-4, 4-1 Channel League) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
As for the indoor volleyball teams in town, Bishop Diego is now 6-0 overall and 3-0 against Tri-Valley League opponents. In the Channel League, San Marcos, Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High all won their league openers last week.
