The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table handed out an individual award and recognized the local fall sports teams still in action at Monday’s weekly press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Cate Aquatics standout Maddie Kollock earned the school’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award, and the high school teams competing in their league championships and the CIF-SS playoffs provided season updates.
Maddie Kollock Earns Cate’s Phil Womble Award
Kollock has been a standout Ram throughout her entire career on campus, both in the pool and in the classroom. As a result, she was named the school’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award winner.
As it states on the SBART website, “This award acknowledges student-athletes who value and incorporate into their daily lives, the following qualities: accountability, respect of teammates, opponents, and officials, honesty, positive attitude, reliability, loyalty, sportsmanship, others above self, and team above personal interest.”
She has rewritten the aquatics records books at Cate, which has consistently boasted an impressive program throughout the years. Kollock was a member of the record-breaking 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.
On top of her individual achievements, Kollock has been a model teammate in her three years as a Ram, according to Cate athletic director Wade Ransom.
“Maddie is remarkable,” Ransom said. “What she does best is she brings everybody in. Water polo might be the toughest sport on the planet, it’s really hard to play. Maddie has really helped the new girls acclimate to a sport and feel comfortable with the team.
“Maddie is just one of those kids that does things right, she does them the right way. She’s on time, she leads by example, she’s kind, she’s enthusiastic and she’s welcoming to teammates all while being a pretty fierce competitor.”
While she has made a profound impact in the pool, Kollock is also a member of the girls volleyball team. She has been sidelined with an injury this season, but remains a strong presence on the bench for a team that will play for the CIF-SS Div. 7 title on Saturday.
“Her leadership is steadfast at every turn,” Ransom said. “We’re so lucky to have Maddie and I could not be more excited in Phl Womble’s honor to bestow the award onto her.”
Kollock is the third of eight Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award winners for this school year, joining Santa Barbara High’s Elina Stump and Dos Pueblos’ Logan Pearce. The award is sponsored by Dave Pintard of the Pintard Group.
“I just want to thank all of my teachers, my coaches and my parents for helping me get to where I am today,” Kollock said.
Fall Sports Playoffs, Championship Season Roll On
The CIF-SS fall playoffs will continue to march on this week, with local football, water polo and volleyball teams looking to keep their seasons alive or capture CIF-SS titles.
Meanwhile, Dos Pueblos, San Marcos and Santa Barbara High’s cross country teams will compete in the Channel League Championship meet on Wednesday in Goleta at 3 p.m.
The Cate girls volleyball team headlines the local teams in action, as the Rams are set to host the CIF-SS Div. 7 Finals on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Carpinteria High.
Cate, which has pulled out three straight playoff victories behind stellar performances from Oyin Opawumi, will roll out the welcome mats for West Valley High with the championship on the line.
On the gridiron, Bishop Diego and San Marcos are the lone 11-man football teams competing in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Cate will begin its quest for an 8-man football title on Saturday.
The Cardinals were slotted into the Div. 4 bracket and will host San Jacinto on Friday at 7 p.m. At the same time, the Royals will clash with South Pasadena on the road in the Div. 11 playoff opener.
“It’s a really good matchup for us,” San Marcos head coach Ralph Molina said. “[South Pasadena] is not too big, not too fast. We’re excited to be there and looking forward to this opportunity.”
Meanwhile, the Rams will play host to United Christian Academy on Saturday at 12 p.m.
