SBART Luncheon: Annika Haugen Named Providence Scholar-Athlete of the Year

As the high school year turns from the fall to winter sports seasons, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table hosted its weekly press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe on Monday.

Providence awarded its Scholar-Athlete of the Year to headline a light luncheon, as many fall sports teams have seen their seasons come to an end.

Annika Haugen Earns Providence Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award

Haugen has made an impact on the court and in the classroom during her time as a Patriot, and as a result, she was awarded the school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.

She has shined on the tennis and beach volleyball squads at Providence, including serving as the team captain of the tennis team that won the CIF-SS Div. 6 championship last year.

Meanwhile, she boasts an impressive 4.56 GPA with a rugged course load that includes AP Statistics, AP Chemistry and AP Macroeconomics.

Haugen, who has won the Providence Upper School Science and Engineering awards, is interested in pursuing an engineering degree in college.

“Thank you for this award, I really appreciate it,” Haugen said. “I want to thank coach Dan Terry and coach Leanne Patterson.”

Haugen is the third of 11 Scholar-Athletes of the Year for this school year, joining Dos Pueblos’ Elliot McGuire and Laguna Blanca’s Bennett Sullivan. The award is sponsored by Marc Gamberdella of the Gamberdella-Spruill Group of Merrill Lynch.

Fall Sports Playoffs Winding Down

As the holidays are fast approaching, so is the high school winter sports schedule. However, a select few local fall sports teams remain alive heading into this week.

The week begins with CIF-SS Girls Tennis playoff action, as Santa Barbara High and Bishop Diego will host their quarterfinal matchups on Monday.

The Dons will host St. Joseph of Lakewood in Division 5, while the Cardinals are set to welcome Rim of the World High to town in Division 8. Both matches begin at 2 p.m.

In the pool, Dos Pueblos boys water polo will head down to Los Angeles to take on Loyola High in the CIF-SS Div. 1 Semifinals on Wednesday. If they win, the Chargers will play in the championship game on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Wednesday’s matchup will be the first time Dos Pueblos has competed in a Div. 1 semifinal for boys water polo since 2009.

“It’s going to be a tough game against Loyola High School. They’re very good,” Dos Pueblos head coach Chris Parrish said. “It’s been a long time for the boys to get back to this spot.

Meanwhile, local cross country squads will compete in the CIF-SS Prelim meet at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday as well.

At the state level, San Marcos, Santa Barbara High and Cate have opted into the CIF State Girls Volleyball Tournament and will open play on Tuesday on the road.

The Royals slotted into Div. 1 and will take on Harvard Westlake, the Dons will face off against Ontario Christian in Div. 3, and Cate will clash with Granada Hills in the Div. 4 bracket.
