Dos Pueblos cross country’s Owen Abbott and Cate volleyball’s Oyin Opawumi impressed in their respective sports last week en route to being named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.

The pairing was honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Abbott shined at the Santa Barbara County Championship meet last week, finishing the three-mile race in 15:10 to finish ahead of the pack and secure an individual county title.
His performance led the way for the Dos Pueblos boys squad, which captured first place as a team.
Meanwhile, Opawumi led the Rams both offensively and defensively last week en route to them punching their ticket to the CIF-SS Div. 7 Finals.
Opawumi began the week with a 29-kill, 15-dig performance in a five-set win over Santa Fe in the quarterfinals and followed that up with 27 kills and 29 digs in a four-set victory over the California Academy of Math and Science.
The boys honorable mentions were Cole Dominguez (SM Football), John Michael Flint (Bishop Football), Phillip Contakes (DP Cross Country), Will Stuart (SM Water Polo) and Grant Nelson (DP Water Polo).
The girls honorable mentions were Jules Horton (SB Volleyball), Sofi Hernandez (DP Cross Country), Cate Bishop (DP Cross Country) and Brooklyn Hedricks (DP Flag Football).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
