Santa Barbara High tennis’ Nicole Buist and Bishop Diego football’s Oscar Mauia put together impressive performances last week en route to winning the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week honors.
The duo was honored at the SBART Press Luncheon on Monday at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Buist capped off a stellar senior regular season last week with a Channel League Singles championship, taking down back-to-back defending champion Mel Mayo of Dos Pueblos.
The title match victory brought an end to a regular season that featured an undefeated Channel League run in both singles and doubles, including zero sets lost in singles action.
Meanwhile, Mauia made his return from injury in grand fashion and helped his Cardinals earn a critical 35-27 victory over rival St. Bonaventure.
The senior running back took 26 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns, including every carry in the final 4:40 of the game as Bishop Diego ran out the clock.
The girls honorable mentions were Kindah Ahmad-Reda (DP Flag Football), Jules Horton (SB Volleyball), Oyin Opawumi (Cate Volleyball), Celeste Alcaraz (DP Golf), Jamaica Cook (Carp Golf), Sofi Hernandez (SM Cross Country) and Cate Bishop (DP Cross Country).
The boys honorable mentions were Stefano Piccoleti (Carp Water Polo), Owen Abbott (DP Cross Country), Aaron Baizan (SB Football) and Monty Lopez (SB Football).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
