The Dos Pueblos Charger pairing of Grant Nelson and Celeste Alcaraz shined in the pool and on the course, respectively, last week en route to being named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
The duo was honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Nelson, a boys water polo standout, began his week with a pair of strong showings in Channel League wins. He recorded a goal and three assists in both of the team’s wins over Rio Mesa and Oxnard.
He followed that up with a clutch showing in one of the biggest games of the season, scoring four goals, including two in overtime, in a 14-13 triple-overtime win over Buena to clinch the regular-season league title.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz helped lead the Dos Pueblos girls golf team to a Channel League championship of their own.
She shot a 40 and earned medalist honors in a win over rival Santa Barbara High that capped off an undefeated league campaign. Alacaraz was the medalist in all of the team’s league victories.
The boys honorable mentions were Cole Dominguez (SM Football), Sam Crawford (Bishop Football), Drew Filippini (Carp Football), Chris Jaimes (Carp Football), Will Stuart (SM Water Polo) and Lorenzo Russell (SB Water Polo).
The girls honorable mentions were Mel Mayo (DP Tennis), Kindah Ahmad-Reda (DP Flag Football), Elina Stump (SB Flag Football), Rio Chesluk (SM Flag Football) and Blake Saunders (SB Volleyball).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
