The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table welcomed back the local high school and college fall sports squads to its weekly press luncheon on Monday at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
From the gridiron to the golf course, coaches provided updates on their teams as the fall season continues to march along.
Cross Country Season Heats Up
The local cross country teams are entering a critical part of the season, as non-league meets have now made way for league competition.
San Marcos, Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos will open up their Channel League season with a league meet on Saturday in Ojai at Lake Casitas.
The meet will have a large impact on the final league standings, so local racers will look to bring their best against their rival racers.
“This is where we get started and where things really start to count and come down to who’s going to make it into the postseason and who isn’t,” Santa Barbara High head coach Olivia Perdices said. “If you want to see some great athletes and some great racing, Saturday morning up in Ojai is a really good place to catch some.”
Meanwhile, Carpinteria High cross country will continue its Citrus Coast League season with its second of four league meets this season on Tuesday.
The Warrior girls are currently in third place in the league standings, while the boys sit in fourth place.
Tackle Football Kicks Off League Play
After three of the five local teams took last week off, the high school football league schedule has arrived.
Bishop Diego (5-0), the lone undefeated team in town, will open the weekend with a rare Thursday matchup to begin a rugged Marmonte League schedule.
The Cardinals will roll out the welcome mats for Camarillo (2-3) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at La Playa Stadium. In last year’s meeting, Bishop Diego shut out the Scorpions for a 26-0 win and its lone league victory of the season.
Meanwhile, Carpinteria High (1-3) will begin its Citrus Coast League season on Thursday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Santa Clara (0-5).
The two teams clashed earlier in the season, with the Warriors running away with a 52-7 rout in their season opener.
“I think we’re getting to the place we need to be,” Carpinteria High head coach Van Latham said. “We’re still moving around the pieces, trying to figure out what way we can play the best. We just need to find more consistency in what we do.
“We’re still making crucial mistakes, giving up big plays. Once we settle down, get out of that mode, I think we’ll be all right.”

On Friday, Dos Pueblos (2-3) will be the lone local squad at home for its league opener after an up-and-down non-league schedule.
The Chargers will begin their Tri-County League season by hosting Hueneme (1-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. Dos Pueblos came out on top, 20-10, in this matchup last year.
Santa Barbara High (3-2) will hit the road and have a tall task in its Conejo Coast League opener against Newbury Park (3-2).
In last year’s showdown, the Panthers rolled to a 35-6 win at Peabody Stadium in Santa Barbara.
San Marcos (1-4), coming off four straight losses in non-league play, will be on the road against a much-improved Fillmore (5-0) squad.
The Royals emerged victorious by a score of 31-17 in this matchup last season.
