After a week off for Labor Day, local fall sports players and coaches filled up the Ranchero Room at Harry’s Plaza Cafe for the second SB Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon of the school year on Monday.
From the gridiron to the pool, the high school squads are gearing up for the heart of league action in the coming weeks with their sites set on the CIF-SS playoffs.

Local Football Teams Tackle Non-League Schedule
With three weeks down for the high school football regular seasons, many of the local teams are beginning to form identities and developing their play styles ahead of their league seasons.
Bishop Diego has come out of the gates on fire, racing out to a 3-0 record while scoring 118 total points along the way. All three of the games have been on the road, including a 34-6 win over Mater Academy East in Las Vegas last week.
“It was nice to get our third win of the season with a 34-6 victory, which was the result of a stingy defense, all game long, and particularly until our offense got going,” Bishop Diego assistant athletic director MeLinda Matsumoto said.

Meanwhile, Santa Barbara High is off to a 2-1 start with victories over Camarillo and Dos Pueblos, and a one-point loss to Corona Del Mar.
“We play a 3-0 Moorpark team (this week),” Dons head coach Nate Mendoza said. “They have a very talented team down at Moorpark, so we’re really, really excited for the challenge and ready to get back to work today.”
Both San Marcos and Dos Pueblos currently stand at 1-2 on the season. The Royals defeated Del Sol before falling to Santa Ynez and Paraclete, while the Chargers defeated Royal High and fell to Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez.
Carpinteria High began its season later than normal, but it proved to be worth the wait after a 52-7 rout of Santa Clara in its opener. The Warriors will host their home opener on Friday at 7 p.m. against San Gabriel.
“We had a long wait to get to our first game, which was supposed to be last week and it was canceled, so we had plenty of practice time, and it paid off big dividends,” Carpinteria High head coach Van Latham said.
The Week Ahead
There are quite a few big matchups this week as the local flag football and volleyball schedules enter the meat of their respective league schedules.
On the flag football field, Dos Pueblos (12-1, 3-0 CL) will play host to Ventura High (3-2, 3-0 CL) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a battle of the top two teams in the Channel League.
The Chargers are coming off a thrilling 15-14 win over San Marcos last Thursday, while the Cougars have outscored their three league opponents by a margin of 121-14.
“Those are the games that get you excited about and certainly it’s going to prepare us for another big game,” Dos Pueblos assistant coach George Hedricks said of the win over San Marcos. “That matchup is certainly going to help us to be ready for that (Ventura) game.”

On Wednesday, Santa Barbara High (4-6, 2-1 CL) will roll out the welcome mats for crosstown rival San Marcos (10-2, 3-0 CL) at 6:30 p.m. inside J.R. Richards Gym.
The Royals, an all-senior squad, have been off to a dominant start to their league season, while the youthful Dons will look to compete behind their home crowd.
The crosstown rivalry games continue on Thursday as Santa Barbara High will head over to San Marcos to take on the Royals in a girls flag football clash at 6:30 p.m.
The final rivalry showdown of the week will come on Friday night when Bishop Diego (10-3, 1-0 TVL) and Cate (3-2) will meet for a girls volleyball battle inside the Brick House at 6 p.m.
