San Marcos student-athletes Austin Downing and Liv Plourde turned in strong individual performances to lead their teams to wins last week and were named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
Downing, a boys golf standout, and Plourde, a leader on the girls lacrosse team, were honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
The San Marcos golf squad picked up two big crosstown rivalry wins over Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos last week, and Downing played a crucial role in them.
Downing shot a one-under-par 69 in the victory over the Dons and followed that up with a one-over-par 73 against the Chargers. He was the leading Royal in both matches.
Meanwhile, Plourde led her team to Channel League victories over Thacher and Dos Pueblos while also making program history.
After scoring four goals in a 19-2 win over Thacher, she collected four goals and five assists in an 18-4 win over Dos Pueblos. In the victory over the Chargers, she set the program record for goals in a career with 108 and counting.
The boys honorable mentions were Alex Ortega (SB Golf), Eric Anthony (SB Baseball), Nick Malesky (Bishop Volleyball), John Michael Flint (Bishop Volleyball), Tyson Deveze (Laguna Volleyball) and Orion Prewarski (DP Lacrosse).
The girls honorable mentions were Alina Magdaleno (SB Softball), Alanah Salas (SB Softball), Jen Won (Cate Swim), Reagan Arnold (DP Lacrosse), Stella Lawler (DP Lacrosse) and Melanie Avalos (Carp Track & Field).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
