San Marcos Standouts Matteo Burdick, Avery Leck Named Athletes of the Week

A pair of San Marcos student-athletes, Matteo Burdick and Avery Leck, turned in big weeks last week en route to being named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.

Leck, a track & field star, and Burdick, a volleyball standout, were honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Burdick spearheaded a successful week for the Royals, beginning with a game-high 21 kills in a five-set victory over crosstown rival Dos Pueblos.

He followed that up by leading his team to a Dos Pueblos Invitational Championship where he was awarded the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award.

Meanwhile, Leck began her week four top finishes in a Channel League meet against Oxnard, coming in first place in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 100 hurdles and high jump.

She also had a strong all-around performance at the Spartan Relays, taking first place in the 100 hurdles and long jump while earning second place in the high jump and fourth place in the 100 meter.

The boys honorable mentions were Noah Grant (DP Volleyball), Orion Prewarski (DP Lacrosse), Cal Denier (DP Lacrosse), Nolan Clark (SM Swim), Sawyer Kelly (Carp Track & Field) and Teddy Vigna (DP Golf).

The girls honorable mentions were Victoria Aldana (SM Lacrosse), Gigi Mills (SM Lacrosse), Tara Gregson (Bishop Softball), Kaitlyn Ashby (DP Softball), Taylor Steelman (SM Swim) and Alena Johnson (SBCC Softball).

The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
