SBART Luncheon: Amber Petraitis Regan Named Providence’s Phil Womble Award Recipient

Providence’s Amber Petraitis Regan was honored and local winter sports squads provided updates ahead of the home stretch of the regular season at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Providence’s Phil Womble Award Winner

Petraitis Regan, a standout on the Providence girls tennis team, earned the Phil Womble Ethics in Sports award for her dedication to Providence both on and off the court and classroom.

As it states on the SBART website, “This award acknowledges student-athletes who value and incorporate into their daily lives, the following qualities: accountability, respect of teammates, opponents, and officials, honesty, positive attitude, reliability, loyalty, sportsmanship, others above self, and team above personal interest.”

“Amber shows a remarkable sense of leadership, not in an ostentatious way that draws attention to herself, or in a way that you would label charismatic, but through her consistent, kind and humble attitude,” Providence girls tennis coach LeAnne Patterson said.

“Amber is devoted to the team both on and off the courts… Amber is willing to play wherever I put her, and sit next to whomever she encounters; she is flexible, agreeable and deeply kind.”

She has been a dominant piece of the Patriots’ squad the last two seasons, earning a pair of First Team All-CIF-SS honors for competition in doubles.

Petraitis Regan was also a key player on Providence’s CIF-SS Div. 6 championship squad last fall.

“She is a positive, encouraging leader and humble and dedicated to her team,” Providence athletic director Dan Terry said. “She is a coach’s dream athlete.”

Off the court, she has accrued over 50 hours of community service, is a member of the Kids Helping Kids Executive Team and has a GPA of 3.56.

Petaitis Regan is the fourth of eight Phil Womble Ethics in Sports award winners for this school year, joining Dos Pueblos’ Anastasia Brunner, Cate’s Josh Butler and Laguna Blanca’s Carter Plowman. The award is sponsored by Dave Pintard of the Pintard Group.

“I want to thank my mom, my sister and my dad,” Petaitis Regan said. “All my coaches have all been super supportive, especially my coach LeAnne Patterson and coach McCollough. They’re both super cool and I look up to them a lot.

“I’m super grateful for this and thank you to everyone who made it possible.”

A Busy Week Ahead

As many winter sports teams have entered the home stretch of their league schedules, and with that come key rivalry matchups.

Many of these rivalry games will have a big impact on the race for the CIF-SS playoffs, which begin for winter sports in two weeks.

One of these playoff races that is coming down to the wire is in Channel League boys basketball, where Santa Barbara High currently sits alone in first place.

However, San Marcos and Oxnard are one game behind the Dons with four games left on the schedule. Santa Barbara High will host Oxnard on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and San Marcos next Monday at 7 p.m.

“We’re in a good spot in the league and this week is really important… it’s a big one for us,” Santa Barbara High head coach Greg Zuffelato said.
