Dos Pueblos wrestling’s Brandon Velasquez and San Marcos soccer’s Zeina Matni turned in strong performances last week to earn the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week honors.
The pairing was honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Velasquez turned in a dominant performance at the Santa Ynez Battle of the Valley Tournament to lead the Chargers to a fourth-place team finish out of 23 teams.
He went 4-0 on the weekend, battling to a championship in the 157-pound division, one of the toughest of the tournament.
Matni continued her stellar scoring season for the Royals last week, accounting for all of the team’s goals in their two Channel League matchups.
She began the week with a pair of goals in a 2-1 win over Ventura and followed that up with the team’s lone goal, a 69th-minute equalizer, in a 1-1 draw with Dos Pueblos.
The boys honorable mentions were Danny Diaz (SM Basketball), DJ Wilson (SB Basketball), Damian Krautmann (Bishop Basketball), Sergio Ramirez (SM Soccer), Jonathan Corona (SB Wrestling) and Rangel Oliva (SB Soccer).
Meanwhile, the girls honorable mentions were Bethany King (SM Water Polo), Yesenia Dunn (SB Water Polo), Lauren Robles (DP Basketball), Jamaica Cook (Carp Basketball) and Dayzia Mendoza (SB Basketball).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nom
