Santa Barbara High girls water polo’s Juliana Horton and Dos Pueblos boys soccer’s John Duffy put up big numbers last week and were rewarded with the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week honors.
The pairing was honored at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon
Horton, a freshman, has started her Dons’ career on a high note, including a six-goal, five-steal performance in a win over Rio Mesa and seven goals in a win over Palisades last week.
She followed those games up with a whopping 10 goals in an 18-15 loss to Camarillo. That scoring burst set the new Santa Barbara High single-game scoring record, surpassing former Olympians Kami Craig and Thalia Munro.
Meanwhile, Duffy led the Chargers to their second straight Cats & Hounds Tournament championship over the weekend.
Duffy was a scoring machine, netting five goals in four games to be named the team’s Tournament MVP. He scored the lone goal in Dos Pueblos’ 1-0 championship game victory.
The girls honorable mentions were Lauren Robles (DP Basketball), Charlotte Cooney (Carp Basketball), Hazel Dugre (Carp Water Polo) and Holliday Smith (Carp Water Polo).
The boys honorable mentions were Luke Zuffelato (SB Basketball), Diesel Lowe (SB Basketball), Crew Sjovold (Bishop Basketball) and George Marin (Cate Soccer).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
