Santa Barbara’s Nicole Buist, Dos Pueblos’ Cullen Gully Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

Santa Barbara High girls tennis’ Nicole Buist and Dos Pueblos cross country’s Cullen Gully excelled in their respective sports last week en route to being named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.

The duo was honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Buist led her Dons’ squad to a CIF-SS Div. 3 title last week, defeating Agoura High in the semifinals before taking down Santa Monica High in the championship match.

The junior dominated singles play for Santa Barbara High, going 3-0 in the title matchup and picking up a pair of wins in the semifinal round.

Meanwhile, Gully turned in a stellar performance at the CIF-SS Prelim meet on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Gully finished tied for first place individually with a time of 15:46.9 to help lead the Charger boys squad to a first-place team finish to clinch a spot in the CIF-SS Finals meet.

The girls honorable mentions were Juliana Horton (SB Water Polo), Eliana Urzua (Bishop Volleyball), Caroline Kenny (Laguna Blanca Tennis) and Hali Wight (Laguna Blanca Tennis).

The boys honorable mentions were Baye Breence (Cate Water Polo), Grant Nelson (DP Water Polo), Aricin Marshall (DP Water Polo) and Micah Barnhart (DP Football).

The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
