Dos Pueblos football’s Kaleb Williams and Bishop Diego volleyball’s Karina Urzua put together strong playoff performances en route to being named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
There was no luncheon on Monday due to Veteran’s Day, so Williams and Urzua will be honored at next Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Williams powered the Charger football program to its first postseason win since 2018 in a 35-27 win over Crescenta Valley in the opening round of the CIF-SS Div. 12 playoffs.
The senior running back took 25 carries for 288 rushing yards and three touchdowns en route to the victory, clinching a home game this Friday for a quarterfinal matchup against Mary Star High.
Meanwhile, Urzua was in the middle of the action all day in Bishop Diego’s five-set loss to Long Beach Poly in the CIF-SS Div. 3 Finals on Saturday.
The freshman collected 38 assists, 14 digs and four aces in a strong all-around performance for the Cardinals. Urzua has played in every match for Bishop Diego this season.
The boys honorable mentions were Quinn Pullen (Cate Football), Laird Finkel (SB Football), Eamon Gordon (DP Cross Country), Cullen Gully (DP Cross Country) and Fletcher Prince (Cate Water Polo).
The girls honorable mentions were Nicole Schuetz (Bishop Volleyball), Ivy Huang (Cate Tennis), Cate Bishop (DP Cross Country), Sophie Blank (Cate Cross Country) and Ashlin Goodwin (Bishop Equestrian – not school sanctioned).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
