ishop Diego volleyball’s Eliana Urzua and Dos Pueblos cross country’s Eamon Gordon stood out in their respective competitions last week en route to being named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
The duo was honored at the SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe on Monday.
Urzua led her Cardinals to a CIF-SS Div. 3 finals appearance last week with strong victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
The UCLA commit had 16 kills and four aces in the quarterfinal win over Royal and racked up 28 kills and four blocks in a four-set victory over Cypress in the semis.
Bishop Diego will take on Long Beach Poly in the CIF-SS Finals on Saturday.
Gordon left the rest of the field in his dust in the Santa Barbara County Cross Country Championship race last week, clinching his third individual county title.
He crossed the finish line with a time of 14:57 in the three-mile race, leading Dos Pueblos to a team championship as well.
The girls honorable mentions were Nicole Schuetz (Bishop Diego Volleyball), Charlotte Cooney (Carpinteria Tennis), Keyla Manriquez (Carpinteria Tennis), Cate Bishop (DP Cross Country) and Francesca Sutch (Cate Cross Country).
Meanwhile, the boys honorable mentions were Nate Jones (SM Football), Cole Dominguez (SM Football), Quinn Pullen (Cate Football), Oliver Kelly (SB Water Polo), Shane Davis (SB Water Polo) and Fletcher Prince (Cate Water Polo).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
