Bishop Diego volleyball’s Nicole Schuetz and San Marcos football’s Roman Gislimberti excelled on the court and the field, respectively, last week to earn the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week honors.
The duo was honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Schuetz was the leading force in a pair of league wins last week for the Cardinals, tallying 24 kills and five aces in a four-set win over St. Bonaventure before racking up 32 kills in a four-set victory over Foothill Tech.
She carried that momentum into the weekend at the SoCal Invitational, leading the team with 41 total kills, eight assists, four blocks and four aces while playing four different positions across the five matches.
Gislimberti was a key force on both sides of the ball for the Royals in their 28-14 win over Rio Mesa to remain undefeated at 2-0 in Tri-County League play.
The 6-foot-3 senior ended the night with three sacks, five tackles and three tackles for loss while also playing every offensive snap at offensive tackle for San Marcos.
The girls honorable mentions were Lux Schubert (Laguna Golf), Sagarika Manian (DP Golf), Izzy Scott (Carp Tennis), Gracie Stone (SM Volleyball), Victoria Aldana (SM Flag Football), Kindah Ahmad-Reda (DP Flag Football) and Ruby Streatfeild (DP Flag Football).
Meanwhile, the boys honorable mentions were Nate Jones (SM Football), Kai Mault (SB Football), Nico Tassos (SB Cross Country), Cullen Gully (DP Cross Country), Will Stuart (SM Water Polo), Mateo Obando (SM Water Polo) and Lucas Neushul (DP Water Polo).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
