San Marcos girls volleyball’s Josie Gamberdella and Sebastian Reed of Carpinteria High boys water polo shined last week en route to being named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
The pairing was honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Gamberdella had plenty of big performances in a busy week for the Royals, including tallying 16 assists and six kills in a sweep of Buena.
She followed that up by turning in 25 assists and seven kills in a four-set rivalry win over Dos Pueblos.
In the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions over the weekend, Gamberdella led San Marcos in assists, was second in aces and slotted into third on the team in digs. The Royals placed third as a team.
Reed played a big role as the Warrior goalkeeper in a couple of wins last week, including a two-goal, three-steal performance in a 20-8 win over Nordhoff.
He also came up clutch in the team’s 7-6 victory over Santa Barbara High, racking up 14 saves, including three in the final 90 seconds of the game to hold on for the win.
The girls honorable mentions were Sadi Adams (SM Golf), Sagarika Manian (DP Golf), Elena Thomas (SM Volleyball), Blake Saunders (SB Volleyball), Taylor Grant (DP Flag Football) and Rio Chesluk (SM Flag Football).
As for the boys, the honorable mentions were Quinn Pullen (Cate Football), Jake Ehlers (Carpinteria Water Polo), Sky Korling (Carpinteria Water Polo) and Grant Nelson (DP Water Polo).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
