Santa Barbara High football’s Carter Debusk and Cate volleyball’s Oyin Opawumi turned in strong performances last week and were rewarded with the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week honors.
The duo was honored at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Debusk stepped up in a big way for the Dons in last week’s 20-20 tie with San Marcos, as he was thrust into the WR1 role after Kai Mault was forced to step in at quarterback due to injury.
The senior wideout did not disappoint, hauling in six catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns in the Big Game rivalry matchup.
Opawumi had a big offensive week for the Rams, leading the team in kills en route to a pair of victories.
The junior tallied 22 kills and five aces in a four-set win over Foothill Tech before exploding for 29 kills in a five-set victory over Villanova Prep.
The boys honorable mentions were Tua Rojas (Bishop Diego Football), Gabe Villa (Bishop Diego Football), Danny Diaz (SM Football), Nate Jones (SM Football) and Quinn Pullen (Cate Football).
Meanwhile, the girls honorable mentions were Sadi Adams (SM Golf), Sagarika Manian (DP Golf), Keenan Engebretson (SB Volleyball) and Addie Low (DP Volleyball).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday afternoon, if possible.
