Both Athletes of the Week this week were Royals, with San Marcos volleyball’s Mason Rice and San Marcos lacrosse’s Mia Martinez-Tomatis earning the honors after standout performances in rivalry matchups.
Rice and Martinez-Tomatis were honored at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
In a crucial crosstown matchup against Dos Pueblos, Rice hammered down 20 kills to lead the Royals to a five-set victory.
He followed that performance up with 12 kills in a sweep of Rio Mesa and then hit .400 in the team’s non-league sweep over Oak Park.
Martinez-Tomatis had a huge night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Channel League against Cate, scoring six goals including the game-winner in double overtime.
Along with also having four ground balls and two assists in that win, she tallied two goals and one assist in a win over Nordhoff earlier in the week.
The boys honorable mentions were Alexander Hajda (DP Baseball), Kaden Spencer (SB Baseball), Quinn Pullen (Cate Baseball), Raglan Kear (SB Volleyball), Jackson Melton (Carpinteria Swim), Shams Jahangir-Arshad (SM Golf), Austin Downing (SM Golf) and Teddy Vigna (DP Golf).
Meanwhile, the girls honorable mentions were Lucy Dessert (SM Softball), Kamilah Morales (SM Softball), Sophia Ospina (Cate Lacrosse), Rose Nelly (SB Swim), Nalani Yim (SB Swim), Estella Gray (SB Swim), Lulu Robana-Wayman (SB Swim) and Sierra Tallman (SM Swim).
