Dos Pueblos’ Reagan Arnold was honored as the school’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award winner to headline Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Along with Arnold being honored, the San Marcos and Santa Barbara High boys volleyball squads made an appearance ahead of their Channel League title matchup on Tuesday.
Reagan Arnold Named Phil Womble Award Winner
Arnold’s dedication to Dos Pueblos both on and off the field earned her the school’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award.
As it states on the SBART website, “This award acknowledges student-athletes who value and incorporate into their daily lives, the following qualities: accountability, respect of teammates, opponents, and officials, honesty, positive attitude, reliability, loyalty, sportsmanship, others above self, and team above personal interest.”
She is a standout on the Charger lacrosse team, leading in both goals and points. She was named to the Channel League First Team last season and was named a team captain this year.
“Reagan truly is the embodiment of excellent sportsmanship,” Dos Pueblos girls lacrosse coach Anais Jimenez said. “Reagan reminds us all that true greatness is not just measured in wins and losses, but in the integrity with which we play the game.”
Off the field, Arnold carries a 4.61 GPA and serves as the yearbook’s sports editor and the junior class treasurer. She is also an AP Scholar and a member of the National Honors Society.
“She is a great example of what we want out of our student-athletes at Dos Pueblos,” athletic director Dan Feldhaus said. “Not only is she a great athlete, but she is very strong academically and she is very involved in our campus life.
“She has been critical in setting our school culture, not only in lacrosse but school-wide. DP is a great place because of students like Reagan Arnold.”
Arnold joins Santa Barbara’s Carter Battle, Bishop Diego’s Harry Hayman, San Marcos’ David Ramirez, Carpinteria’s Penny Wrought, Providence’s Sabine Zermeno and Cate’s Daisy Gemberling as this year’s recipients.
“This is an amazing award, I’m really honored to be receiving it,” Arnold said. “I just want to thank my coaches who allow me to be here today and my teammates, for whom I would have nothing to lead without.”
Dave Pintard of the Pintard Group sponsors the award.
Boys Volleyball Rivalry Matchup for Channel League Title
After two stellar seasons by both squads, San Marcos and Santa Barbara High will square off for the Channel League title on Tuesday inside the Thunderhut.
Both the Royals and the Dons hold a league record of 8-1.
The last time these two teams met up, Santa Barbara came out on top in four sets over San Marcos in a high-intensity matchup.
“Make no mistake, the door to the Channel League in boys volleyball goes through Santa Barbara,” Royals coach Roger Kuntz said. “For the last 20 years, you have to beat SB at least once and hopefully twice in order to have a shot at it.
“Coach Arneson does an incredible job with his young men over there and they’ve had talent over the years.”
The Royals will look to stay on a roll, as they have won 17 straight games. Meanwhile, the Dons will have a chance to bounce back from a loss to Dos Pueblos last week.
“We’re looking forward to the challenge,” Santa Barbara coach Chad Arneson said. “If you’re not doing anything tomorrow, please come and watch some really good high school volleyball because there are a lot of great players on both teams.
“We’ve known each other for a long time so it’s a really fun community environment.”
The matchup will take place in the Thunderhut on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
“Home court advantage for Dos Pueblos, San Marcos and Santa Barbara is a big thing, so we’re lucky that we’ve got them at our place tomorrow night,” Kuntz said.
