Santa Barbara High basketball’s Tobin Shyrock and Dos Pueblos girls water polo’s HanaLora Abel vaulted their teams to two playoff wins last week to earn Athlete of the Week honors.
Shyrock and Abel were honored at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Playing point guard for the Dons, Shyrock collected nine points, nine assists and six rebounds in a 72-48 win over Viewpoint in the opening round of the CIF-SS Div. 3A playoffs.
He followed that up with a dominant defensive performance in a second-round 63-54 win over West Torrance, holding their top scoring option to just six points.
Meanwhile, Abel kicked off her playoff run with three goals in a CIF-SS Div. 1 opening win over El Segundo.
She then turned around and scored the game-winning goal in a 5-4 overtime victory over Schurr to punch a ticket into the semifinals against Corona Del Mar on Wednesday.
The boys honorable mentions were Thiago Valerio (Santa Barbara Soccer), Inak Phillips (Laguna Blanca Soccer), Erik Perez (San Marcos Baseball), Carlo Suarez (Carpinteria Basketball) and Luke Zuffelato (Santa Barbara Basketball).
As for the girls, the honorable mentions were Carly Letendre (Dos Pueblos Basketball), Justine Katz (Dos Pueblos Basketball), Jamaica Cook (Carpinteria Basketball), Kacey Hurley (Dos Pueblos Soccer) and Alina King (Dos Pueblos Water Polo).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday morning, if possible.
